RU teachers demand punishment of the killers of Prof. Taher
The killers of the Prof. Dr. S Taher Ahmed, professor of the Geology and Mining department, are not tried after passing fifteen years. The teachers of the department arranged a mourning and prayer meeting to claim quick trial and execution of the verdict on Tuesday (2 February).
In this meeting, the teachers demanded disposal of the high court’s verdict and execution of it. At the same time, the teachers drew attention of the government to establish justice and punishment of the culprits.
Earlier, on the night of 1st February in 2006, the killers had brutally killed Prof. Taher Ahmed at the university residence and left him in a manhole.
The accused, Dr. Mia Md. Mohiuddin, Salam, Nazmul and Jahangir were sentenced to death in the lower court in 2008. And in 2013, the High Court convicted Mia Md. Mohiuddin and Jahangir to death sentence and Salam and Nazmul to life imprisonment. However, the verdict is still awaiting in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Among others Prof. Sultan-ul-Islam, chairman of the department, Prof. Hamidur Rahman, Prof. M. Habibur Rahman, Prof. Yunus Ahmed Khan, Prof. Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Prof. Khandokar Imamul Haque, Prof. Mrinal Kanti Roy, Prof. Golam Sabbir, director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences delivered speech in the meeting.
